How We Do It

Each morning, our reporters scour the Web for muckraking from newspapers, magazines and blogs and compile a list of the latest stories breaking on the Web. (If you are interested in taking a peek, here are the roughly 200 sites on our reading list.)

In a front page feature called Scandal Watch, we also track the development of the biggest investigative stories in the U.S. right now. (Thanks to Craig Newmark for the idea.) The entries -- some of them specific scandals and others long-time issues such as earmark abuse -- are selected by our editors and ranked by our assessment of intensity of coverage. For example, if military contractor abuse hasn't received much attention recently, it will fall down the list, regardless of how important we think it is.

So how do we choose what scandals make the list? In a word: judgment. What we’re looking for are violations of public trust -- in government, politics, business or any other realm. If you think there are stories -- or scandals -- we’re missing, .
