New Scandal: Alaska!
In light of Sen. Ted Stevens’ indictment yesterday, we’ve added a new scandal to our Scandal Watch—Alaska! It focuses on the far-reaching political corruption scandal involving Alaska lawmakers and VECO Corp, an oil services company based in Alaska. The Justice Department has been probing the company’s ties with Alaska politicians for evidence of bribery and corruption since 2004. As a result, VECO’s ex-CEO Bill Allen and ex-Vice President Rick Smith pleaded guilty to bribery last year. In addition, three state legislators have landed in jail and two more await trial. Others—including Rep. Don Young (R-AK) and Stevens’ son, ex-State Senate President Ben Stevens—may still be under investigation.
