Three Years and Counting
Dear Reader,
Today marks the third anniversary of the day we began publishing -- and what a remarkable three years it has been.
We have won two Pulitzer Prizes -- the first ever awarded to an online news organization, and the first for stories not published in print. But that is not what we are proudest of.
Instead, what we celebrate today is journalism with impact. We've written stories that helped spur:
- nationwide awareness of the threat from unregulated gas drilling to our water supplies;
- better treatment (and Purple Hearts) for our brain-injured troops;
- reform at leading medical schools with respect to payments from pharma companies to doctors;
- a new understanding of how the financial crisis was exacerbated by Wall Street greed;
- a crackdown on police violence in New Orleans; and
- more effective oversight of nursing in California.
As you may know, ProPublica is a non-profit news organization and our investigative reporting is supported by donations. A tax-deductible contribution to ProPublica helps us reveal critical stories that wouldn't otherwise be told- -- stories that make a difference, stories with moral force.
Please help us celebrate our third birthday by making a donation today: https://www.propublica.org/site/donate/
The truth is, there has been market failure in journalism. For-profit news organizations no longer are investing nearly as much in the work and critical oversight that investigative reporting provides. We are extremely proud of ProPublica's editors and reporters, who every day are helping produce stories that fill this gap. And our stories have impact. We ask you for your support so that ProPublica can continue to expose people and institutions that abuse power.
Please donate today: https://www.propublica.org/site/donate/
There are also other ways to get involved in ProPublica's community. Follow our coverage on Facebook and Twitter, add your voice by commenting on stories and features, and participate in our community reporting projects by becoming a member of ProPublica's Reporting Network.
In three years' time, ProPublica has made a real difference with our reporting. With your support, we will continue to tell stories with impact.
Best,
Dick Tofel
