Hannah-Jones Wins Hechinger Grand Prize for Education Reporting

The Education Writers Association awarded its top prize last night to Nikole Hannah-Jones for her stories about the lingering effects of segregation in American schools.

The award, the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting, follows Hannah-Jones’s first-prize win in the association’s beat category, announced in March.

“Beautifully written and elegantly presented on the Web, ‘Segregation Now’ soars as a piece of ambitious, thoughtful journalism,” the association’s review board members wrote. “Hannah-Jones supplements her work with helpful data, legal research and shoe-leather reporting, reminding us of the lingering legacy of racial discrimination on schoolchildren.”
