ProPublica Hires Jennifer Stahl as Research Editor

ProPublica announced today that Jennifer Stahl will be joining its staff Nov. 10 as research editor.

Stahl was a member of the New Yorker's editorial staff for five years, where she notably helped research and fact-check Lawrence Wright's 25,000-word investigation into the Church of Scientology. She also helped research and edit a biography of Roger Ailes and fact-check a biography of Tennessee Williams, currently a finalist for the National Book Award. Mostly recently, she's been working as a freelance research editor for the New York Times.

"In my career so far, I've been lucky to work for institutions and people with high ideals,” Stahl said. “That's why I feel so honored and excited to join the talented staff of ProPublica, an organization that practices journalism in the public interest at the highest level."

Eric Umansky, assistant managing editor of ProPublica, said, “Jennifer’s experience gives her the kind of strong foundation ProPublica needs to execute its investigative mission. We are thrilled to have found her and can’t wait to have her on board.”
