The finalists for the Online Journalism Awards were announced today, and once again, ProPublica made the cut. This year we were nominated for General Excellence in Online Journalism (small site, defined as between 100,000 and one million monthly unique visitors), and for the Gannett Foundation Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism (small site) for our Law & Disorder series about questionable post-Katrina shootings by the New Orleans Police Department. ProPublica was also nominated along with our partner NPR for the Gannett Foundation Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism (large site) and Online Video Journalism (large site) for reports in our joint series about traumatic brain injuries suffered by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Interestingly, eight of the 14 English-speaking sites that were nominated for general excellence were nonprofit sites.

Last year, ProPublica won in the General Excellence category (again, small site). A complete list of this year’s nominees is available here. The winners will be announced at an awards banquet in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 30.
