ProPublica Projects Nominated for 2011 Emmy Awards
ProPublica is proud to report that three of its projects have been nominated for Emmy Awards.
Law & Disorder, a documentary filmed with PBS Frontline, has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Investigative Journalism -- Long Form. This project examined the questionable police shootings by the New Orleans Police Department in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and ProPublica's A.C. Thompson was the lead correspondent in the report. Thompson has won several journalism awards, including the George Polk Award, for this reporting and the investigation helped lead to the conviction of three former NOPD officers.
The Spill, another project with Frontline, is nominated for Outstanding Business and Economic Reporting -- Long Form. This joint investigation follows the ever-growing list of problems -- deadly accidents, disastrous oil spills and countless safety violations -- which have long plagued BP, and attempts to figure out if the Gulf spill could have been prevented. ProPublica's Abrahm Lustgarten was the lead reporter on the project and has written extensively about last summer's Gulf oil spill.
Our joint project with NPR, Brain Wars: How the Military is Failing Its Wounded, was nominated for New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Current News Coverage. ProPublica's T. Christian Miller and NPR's Daniel Zwerdling were the correspondents for this project, which uncovers the military's failure to diagnose, treat and document traumatic brain injuries -- what some have called the 'signature injury' of soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can read more about their investigation here.
