ProPublica Wins Tobenkin Award

ProPublica's Nikole Hannah-Jones is the recipient of this year's Paul Tobenkin Memorial Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in reporting on racial or religious discrimination in the U.S.

Hannah-Jones was also honored by the Society of the Silurians, an organization of distinguished veteran journalists, with its 2013 Excellence in Journalism Award in Online Services, Investigative News for her series on fair housing.

The judges credit Hannah-Jones for her "penetrating examination of why segregated housing patterns have persisted in the U.S. five decades after the passage of the landmark Fair Housing Act. Focusing on both historical and present-day issues, including the situation in Westchester County, her startling findings showed that both Democratic and Republicans presidents have chosen not to enforce one of the nation's most important civil rights laws."
