Three ProPublica Finalists in Loeb Awards for Business Journalism

The UCLA Anderson School of Management has named three ProPublica investigations as finalists in its 2016 Gerald Loeb Awards, one of the most prestigious honors in business journalism.

Color of Debt by Paul Kiel, Annie Waldman and Al Shaw is a finalist in beat reporting. The project analyzed racial disparities in the use of lawsuits to pursue consumer debts, showing that such judgments are massed in black neighborhoods.

Insult to Injury, a collaboration between ProPublica reporters Michael Grabell and Lena Groeger, and Howard Berkes of NPR, is a finalist in the explanatory category. Their investigation uncovered how, state by state, the nation's workers’ compensation system is being quietly dismantled – and at what human cost.

Debt by Degrees by Sisi Wei and Annie Waldman is a finalist in the images/graphics/interactives category. A mix of investigative stories and a searchable database that allows you to look up how U.S. colleges compare when it comes to low-income students, the project showed that many wealthy institutions are leaving their poorest students with big debt.

Winners will be announced in June. See the full list of finalists here.
