The maps below show mining claims within 10 miles of the Colorado River in 2001 and 2008. The data were downloaded from the Bureau of Land Management's database by the Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based policy organization. According to the BLM's database, on Jan. 19, 2001, there were 3,222 mining claims within 10 miles of the Colorado River and 5,763 claims on Oct. 1, 2008.
