ProPublica announced Tuesday that Hannah Beckler has been hired as a data reporter. She started on July 1.
Beckler was most recently a reporter on Business Insider’s enterprise desk, where she was part of a team honored with a George Polk Award for “The True Cost of Data Centers,” a data-driven investigation of the data center construction boom and its impact on the environment, economy and communities across the U.S. Her reporting on C-section rates at over 1,700 U.S. hospitals was named a National Magazine Award finalist the same year.
In 2024, Beckler’s investigation of attack-trained prison patrol dogs sparked bipartisan legislation in Virginia to curb the use of dogs to bite and terrify incarcerated men. Her reporting was honored with a National Magazine Award and a Hillman Prize.
“Hannah has a history of doing and pitching smart data-driven investigations, and we’re looking forward to bringing her enthusiastic approach to the job to ProPublica,” said Ken Schwencke, senior editor for data and news applications.
