ProPublica is Hiring Reporters for ProPublica Illinois

ProPublica is looking for topflight reporters to join us at ProPublica Illinois.

As ProPublica, one of America’s most innovative newsrooms, launches its first regional operation in Chicago, we are looking for topflight reporters to join us at ProPublica Illinois. As part of our team, you will take on ambitious, compelling stories designed to surprise, reveal, inform and bring about change.

We are looking for reporters with:

  • A track record of aggressive, resourceful, original reporting
  • A gift for weaving revelatory findings into authoritative, powerful narratives
  • A willingness to embrace different kinds of storytelling, from traditional longreads to audio to whatever may emerge next on the social web
  • A demonstrated commitment to collegiality and collaboration

Most importantly, though, we want to hire journalists who bring a diversity of experiences, talents and viewpoints to their work. So, if you don’t think you can check off every box on the list above but are confident you can contribute to our efforts, please don’t hesitate to apply.

What you should send us:

The most important piece by far is your past work. Send us URLs to your best stuff.

We’d also ask that you to submit a memo that describes what you’d most want to report on at ProPublica Illinois. Lay out a project you think we should do and tell us how you would do it. What might specific stories be? How should they be told? How would you imagine achieving impact? Show us how you think.

To apply, go to this page. If you have any questions, email us at [email protected].

ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. Therefore, ProPublica is committed to diversity and especially encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.

The deadline for applying is March 24.
