ProPublica is Hiring a Research Editor

Update: This position is no longer available.

ProPublica is looking for a research editor. You will work with reporters across the newsroom to do the kind of deep digging required to put out rigorous, powerful investigations. You’ll be a repository of deep knowledge about public records databases – everything from PACER, to Accurint to a service or platform we haven’t even heard of.

You’ll team up with reporters to plot out the best way to find whatever is needed for a story. And you’ll coordinate with them to make sure we have the resources needed to get it done. That could mean buying access to a database, bringing in freelance help, or showing a reporter where to look.

We’re looking for somebody:

  • with advanced skills in using public records databases to ferret out facts. Being able to search Nexis or PACER is great, but what we want is somebody who’s eager to dig deeper.
  • who has shown the ability to track down people who are hard to find.
  • has experience with FOIA and state public record laws.
  • is eager to work with others. We’re very much a collaborative newsroom and you’ll be a key part of that.

The job is based in New York. We are open to either full-time, or part-time if you prefer that.

ProPublica is committed to diversity and especially encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.

If you are interested, please email [email protected]. No phone calls, please.

The deadline for applications is Sept. 25.
