ProPublica is Hiring a Senior Editor, Audience and Engagement

Update, Aug. 16, 2016: We are no longer accepting applications for this position.

ProPublica is seeking a senior editor for audience and engagement to lead our efforts to make readers and communities a central part of how we do accountability journalism. Engaging readers in all aspects of our reporting has been at the heart of our work since our earliest days, in groundbreaking projects like Free the Files and the Segregation NowSix Words” collaboration. We have carried this approach into our recent work on crowd-powered news, from our Agent Orange initiative to the Voices of Patient Harm.

We want you to lead us to do even more.

Understanding audience and community engagement are critical to our future as an organization, from the way we report and tell stories, to the impact that work has in the world, to engaging our audience to support our work, financially and otherwise.

This is a senior editorial position based in our New York offices. You will lead a team of your own and work closely with the entire organization to develop and implement a vision for how to engage communities around our journalism, before, during and after the reporting process.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Infectious enthusiasm for community, whether that’s through experience in a newsroom engagement role, through other work, such as political campaigns, community organizing, or user-experience design.
  • Rich experience working across teams to identify opportunities, resources, and/or the potential for collaborative projects to develop.
  • The skills and curiosity to dig into data, identifying tools, metrics and insights that can help us extend our reach and the impact of our work.
  • A point of view on how social tools, new technologies, and design can be used to further our journalism and our mission — not just drive clicks.

Our work is serious — but we like to experiment, take risks, and have fun; you should share those values.

What you should send us:

The most important part by far is your past projects. Send us URLs to your best work. Include a few sentences letting us know what role you played in each. Don’t be shy — tell us what worked (numbers and evidence of impact welcome!) and how you’d do it differently next time.

We also want to hear your ideas. What are you excited about doing here, and where do you think we should go next? Keep it short, but give us something to think about before your interview. Send those along with a resume [email protected].

The deadline for applications is Sunday, June 5th.

ProPublica is committed to diversity and especially encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.
