ProPublica Is Looking for a Freelance Social Visuals Producer (Contract)

We are looking for a visual journalist to embed with the engagement team to help us define the look and feel of our work.

We are no longer accepting applications for this position. See available positions here.

We’re expanding ProPublica’s “no-bullshit” engagement team. We are looking for a visual journalist to embed with the engagement team to help us define the look and feel of our work. This is a freelance position that will begin immediately and run until the end of 2017.

What you’ll do:

  • You’ll be the discerning eye behind our social platform strategy — not just using social to promote stories, but rather as places to publish them. What could this mean? Think: smart, simple infographics; clear, catchy animations; perfectly sized illustrations; a Facebook Live set with correct lighting and a clever framing; side-by-side contradictory quote cards from officials; and can you help us with our Instagram? Really, we’re open to as many ideas as you’ve got.
  • You’ll be creating visual assets for ProPublica’s Twitter, Facebook, newsletters and anywhere else our journalism is shareable. And you’ll be templatizing them so we can make good use of your work over and over again.
  • You’ll be one of our liaisons to the design, production, news apps, and video teams on major projects, turning smart journalism into smart social presentation.

What we’re looking for:

  • Someone comfortable experimenting with visual editing and graphic design software, including Adobe Photoshop
  • Basic video editing skills in Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro would be nice. We’re also hoping for someone with thoughtful iPhone shooting skills. (Yes, we have fancier equipment, too.)
  • If you’ve got any experience with illustration or animation, tell us about that! Or audio. We’d love to hear it.
  • Someone genuinely interested in the social web, who keeps an eye on the latest trends, and who will guide us toward good and interesting work at other outlets
  • We care the most about making sure we’re presenting our stories with accuracy and rigor. Journalism experience, especially involving hard-hitting stories that shed light on injustices, would be a plus.

Some examples:

We also know that great candidates can bring skills to ProPublica that we haven’t thought of, and who won’t fit everything we’ve described above. If this sounds exciting to you, apply using this form. A strong track record will go far in our eyes, but we’re also open to looking at some proposed treatments on our recent stories. Our journalism is your oyster.

This job would be based in our New York office. The deadline for applications is Sunday, May 14.

ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. Therefore, we are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
