ProPublica Wins Three Malofiej Awards for Infographics

The Malofiej Awards announced today that ProPublica has won three awards in its annual competition honoring the best infographics in media from around the world.

Bronze awards went to:

Over 1,100 Health Data Breaches, but Few Fines, a project by news applications developer Sisi Wei and senior reporter Charles Ornstein that collected and published 1,419 large-scale data breaches by insurers, hospitals and doctors’ offices that failed to adequately protect the security and privacy of medical records. This searchable tool shows how, of those breaches, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services fined only 19.

Workers’ Comp Benefits: How Much is a Limb Worth? This visual tool, by news applications developer Lena Groeger and reporter Michael Grabell, conveys the vast state-by-state differences in workers’ compensation – by showing the difference in benefits paid per body part lost on the job.

Darren Sharper Facebook Video. A triumph of adapting traditional investigative journalism for a mobile and social audience, this video by senior engagement editor Amanda Zamora, community editor Terry Parris Jr. and former audience engagement fellow Annie Z. Yu calculates how many days former NFL star and serial rapist Darren Sharper had to rape new victims until police arrested him. It accompanied a full investigation by ProPublica reporters T. Christian Miller and Ryan Gabrielson, along with reporters Ramon Antonio Vargas and John Simerman of The New Orleans Advocate.
