Watch Live at 4:00 ET: ProPublica and UVA Talk on Rape Reporting

Today ProPublica, in partnership with the University of Virginia Department of Media Studies and Center for Media and Citizenship, is co-hosting a discussion at UVA on the ethics, pitfalls and best practices surrounding journalistic investigations of rape cases.

This event will be webcast live today starting at 4 p.m. EDT. Watch here, and follow the conversation online using #ProPubLive.

“ProPublica Live: An Examination of Reporting on Rape” will feature senior reporter T. Christian Miller — who last week won a Pulitzer Prize for his jointly reported story on a young woman’s victimization after being sexually assaulted and disbelieved by police — in conversation with UVA professor of media studies and sociology Andrea Press. Moderated by Siva Vaidhyanathan, director of UVA’s Center for Media and Citizenship, the discussion was also inspired by a now-debunked 2014 Rolling Stone article that centered on a UVA student’s account of an alleged rape at a campus fraternity house.

Both stories will serve as springboards for a wide-ranging talk on the journalism ethics that arise when reporting on victims of sexual assault, myths about rape victims that affect police and civilians alike, and other thorny matters that, a year after the discrediting of Rolling Stone’s “A Rape on Campus,” continue to pulse through the UVA community.

Tune in here, and join the conversation using #ProPubLive.
