ProPublica announced Wednesday that Peter Finn will serve as an assistant managing editor in Washington, D.C. He’s bringing a formidable track record of leading high-impact, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigations and decades of experience navigating the complexities of national security and global affairs to the expanding Washington newsroom.
Finn joins ProPublica after 31 years at The Washington Post, where he most recently served as the newsroom’s international editor. Prior to that position, he was the newsroom’s senior editor for international investigations, and before that he spent nearly a decade as the Post’s national security editor. In those roles, Finn directed coverage of some of the most consequential stories of the past 20 years, from the war in Ukraine and the Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election to the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi and the expanding power of Latin American drug cartels. His teams’ work has won or been finalists for multiple Pulitzers, including last year’s finalist for international reporting for a package of stories from the Gaza Strip that included one 6-year-old Palestinian girl’s desperate pleas for help before being killed by Israeli tank fire.
Finn came to editing after an exceptional career as a reporter and foreign correspondent. He served as the Post’s bureau chief in Warsaw, Berlin and Moscow, and he pioneered a new counterterrorism beat in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. He was also a two-time Pulitzer finalist for his international reporting from Kosovo and Afghanistan.
“We are thrilled to have Peter joining our newsroom leadership team,” Managing Editor Ginger Thompson said. “His impressive track record managing coverage for several of the most consequential stories throughout the past two decades will serve as an invaluable addition, especially at a time when covering Washington has never been more competitive and crucial.”
