How Many Die From Medical Mistakes in U.S. Hospitals?

An updated estimate says it could be at least 210,000 patients a year – more than twice the number in the Institute of Medicine’s frequently quoted report, “To Err is Human.”

For mold issues please go to katy’ and
for bio issues, please go to, Beware that there are many “mine fields” of data on both. The fraud & corruption in what we’ve discovered is way over ripe for an investigation by the feds that need to be done that encompasses the whole of the “healthcare” system at large!
and the U.S.Patent office is allowing the patenting of products that have and will help continue to do us more medical harm under the guise of “health care”.

Dear Dina   YUP   Clarifying enough..  I worked for the veterans Hospital…..  You asked about patients Rights…  Do you mean that well put together pamphlet, patients are given..  Then almost all those rights are violated., and the unsuspecting patient, believes that that paper protects them.  What the public does not know is all those rights can and are violated, and there is NO ONE and NO agency that enforces them.    Did you know that New doctors today do not take the Hippocratic Oath.? Oh and ethics…. That depends who is the social worker on duty that day. I still believe there are some good caring ethical people in health care, but i sure have not met very many in the last several years.  What else i found is just like you said , if they come forward, they are labeled, and asked to look for a job where they will be happier.  I still can’t understand how the Law is different for a medical center when the law is broken..

Shirley do not ever worry about me giving up. I have been at this for six years and will never lose my resolve. This is about human life and death and how it has been placed in second position by power, politics, greed and the back pockets of our corrupt politicians.
It would be wonderful to have ProPublica publish an article as to what we want to accomplish and our mission statement. The time for talk is long past and it is time to actually do something to try and help others from having to follow Dick Durbin’s solution to all this or learn from it. What an education you get watching your loved one die and having to deal with the biggest enemy anyone will ever face or the very people responsible for killing your loved one.
This is the society we have allowed to form around us and how terrible it is to realize that the people who killed your loved one, which they call an adverse event, are able to do anything including altering the patient’s medical records after they have been eliminated without any form of recourse. I guess this is what money can buy in today’s world and why 1,000,000 plus people will be killed this year, the next and the next by today’s US Medical Industry and the congress, senate and president that supports it.

The first doctors TO NOT have to take the Hippocratic oath. why none other than kaiser! AND I swear to God as my witness, that I never seen such B.S. done in any hospital like I did there while working or trying to, doing what was best for the patient, absolutely the worst of anything a person could see. Yes, there are some good people out there but they are harassed and abused like myself and others were. When you have the architect of evil medicine that does permeate at all levels including medical schools(kaiser is a teaching hospital-yikes) and a new doctor receives a guaranteed retirement if they keep costs low for their first 3 years while working at kaiser, which means denying care to patients at any costs like increasing the death rolls, and that does include our VA. My brother a vet has the same problems as outside patients do with the VA. The story is the same because the architect IS the same.

Dina J. Padilla

Oct. 7, 2013, 9:23 p.m.

I’ve just recently tried to call the FBI because for one reason like fraud & corruption in another system that denies health care, this is what it takes to get a complaint to the DOJ for them to get an investigation going, going the only way, by way of a FBI complaint. I await to hear from them, I’ve had to contact them in the past because of a SLAPP suit and my phone was tapped and PC hacked. AND that’s another story but I know kaiser was involved too, indirectly. They’ve pretty much got more protection than the president I think because of their connection to the DOD & DOE. AND therein lies why they get to have done what they’ve done and infiltrate other federal agencies with their idea of health care policies including the Veteran’s Administration & CDC to name just a few.
The biggest part of the problem is that kaiser is so insulated from laws or law enforcement or anything else & when you have a whole host of pols not taking legitimate complaints or shutting down hearings on legitimate public comment, I’m left with you tube and now I think it WOULD take an act of Congress to get anything done but kaiser supplies a lot of our federal money (tax & premium dollars) for their insulation against any law to prevent them from getting dinged in any way that is really corrective.. So, here I sit at least trying to educate on what is really going on. I ran for congress twice and CA Ins Comm for what it’s worth to get out the word on working and health issues. One of the quotes was “the sicker you are, the more money insurance companies & HMO’s make”. It has been a really long slog and I really appreciate being able to at least educate on this forum so far. Kaiser has ruined many lives with their idea of health care and it is all too attract more federal money to keep seeping in their policies to get garner more federal money. A very vicious money merry go around for them all to keep adding to their own little treasury, if you will but that money isn’t going for real health care so the public and private sector is paying for next to nothing and the money is going for other things unrelated to health care or medical care.
To address the hippocratic oath issue, I wonder now if a doctor doesn’t take the hippocratic oath, does that mean he/she is a real doctor?
The other issue is that when kaiser decided to hurt their employees, the same group of people were hurt as what is happening with today’s folks in the political arena minorities, including women, sick, disabled, (include our vets) elderly, poor, sick or dead. Many women of all colors lost not only their jobs but also, lost their ability to take care care of their children and lost everything and some, their lives. In those groups were also men of a certain older age and of color!
I can honestly say that I never could ever have dreamed that this could ever be happening. It’s like being in a never ending ongoing T.V.series called the ‘Twilight Zone”

Dina   keep educating. Some of us out here know what you are talking about.  We often refer to it as the mad hatters tea party in Alice in Wonderland, where nothing makes sense.  Twilight Zone is good too.  Because of your, information i know now how evil this really is, i am more determined than ever to get this story out.  Every thing YOU tell about is what i have seen at the MAYO CLINIC Rochester Minnesota.  They do the same thing to their employee’s. I have neighbors that could have written your story.  They too are insulated from the law and law enforcement. The county attorney will not even investigate a reported murder. We have had some success with our Department of justice. They joined a Doctor that reported that Mayo clinic routinely billed for surgical pathology services that were never provided. Because he was a doctor and a lawyer, he represented the families of the people that died.  The Mayo clinic recently paid   Over 126 million to settle this fraud.  The doctor made this discovery when he was looking into why a patient that had cancer died. When he as a doctor felt , this patient should have survived.  I know first hand they change medical records.  I have a copy of a record before it was changed.  I did report this to our state Medical board, But we rank Number two from the bottom of the worst board action. Some U.S. Senators did ask for more oversight of Medical boards. OVERSIGHT of what ?  I still do not know.  I still think Dayton has the right Idea we all need to go to Washington.  I think we also need to elect a new kind of politician if it is not to late..

We had found out about the MAYO clinic over 10 years ago, that it was no longer the ebacon of health care. The iniversity of Ill. the same thing. Many of these hospital now receive many millions of federal funds (grants) for research like in the bacteria, mold world, say for instance the plague . One scientist who workd for thme for over 30 years was exposed to the plague in his lab, his supervisor wrote a note to NOT give any antibiotics and the scientist died of the plague. This case did go to the FBI & the IL. state AG.. This was not only premeditated but no one doing anything about it. The dead man had been chastised because he wasn’t doing enough to help secure 150 million grant for that/lab/research.
There is a similar case but the scientist lives with the horrid results of being exposed to some germ that Phizer was making. Phizer claimed it was their trade secret and did not have to give the info to her the health care she needs and the exposed scientist still does not know what she has or what medical.
I know both the ex-wife of the dead scientist and also the scientist that lives!. . refers to some other cases as well.
AS long as the federal government is giving out these hundreds of millions to these so called research and schools without any accountability, I believe, this is what will continue and we as patients ARE BEING SET UP TO JUST GET SICK, SICKER & DIE. The UC’s of CA. receive many millions of fed money and to help the bio world that is engineering/creating little frankensteins (germs & mold & bio products) that are more harmful than anything else and it’s because of other pharma & university labs and then off to the U.S.Patent office. It’ is perhaps the of the biggest bilking of our federal tax dollars besides military dollars and just needs to be stopped and we’ll be a lot better off. BTW: THE DOD/MILITARY secures these HUNDREDS OF millions to the pharma and universities? WHY?

Dina         Yes Mayo clinic gets lots of research dollars.  The Department of justice on May 26 2005 reported that the Mayo Foundation paid the united states 6.5 million to settle a grant fraud investigation.  Then as i said earlier they paid 126 million for billing fraud., last year.  You seem to have a long history with all this information. Do you still work at the Kaiser ?

Oct. 8, 2013, 12:43 p.m.

I am a contributing member of and if you look under Worker’s comp page(puzzle piece), you’ll see little ole me & I’m on the KPRC board. The site is in the congressional internet archives and there are thousands upon thousands of pages of data. When being hurt on job back in 1988(it was actually before but I didn’t know a damn thing about what is called WC, WHERE, many of my co-workers including me where going out the door because kaiser started getting rid of the older, minority, female, disabled & union workers and that I had to start to try and understand why we weren’t not getting the right medical care or wage replacements according the state of CA. Constitution! We also have a board which I am a member of.
I know that when I bring up WC, people automatically assume we’re all malingerers, frauds but this was the beginning to set people up to not only not give them their medical care because we were injured but we lost our in lieu of work replacement benefits such as health care benefits as well. I got involved not knowing ANYTHING about the royal denial of all of our health care or why. Well, needless to say, this is an education I did not bargain for or even knew the monumental illegal ramifications and that the whole WC system IS corrupt with fraud and abuse and the state of CA. sanctions every bit of it. The medical board here has kaiser doctors on it so, many patients have lost out on getting docs at kaiser sanctioned but I think now the Medical Board may be changing because of patients being fed up at the cover up of kaiser’s continual fake medicine and the deaths occurring and law enforcement will not get involved because they “don’t know about medical care”. One patient’s family DID phone record everything going on at a their’s family members death roll and the police did do something then but that is one of how many? There is a lot of data on and I’m sure anyone who’s been hurt or family member offed by a medical company/corporation would easily connect with the idea of the total lack of medical treatment & accountability & is the same as Kaiser’s MO and or boiler plate of meting out “health care” as we now know it to be, Our site was started in 2003-2004. We are a non-profit but unlike Kaiser, we have little to no money. It is truly the hard work of a few whose lives have been horribly changed because of kaiser kare!
When times look dour for us (when we ask why are we doing this) we can at least say, we’re trying to educate as many patients and family members as possible and that definitely (unfortunately)  none of us are not alone in this medical holocaust. That this has been a plan hatched up by health care corporations across the U.S. & TOTALLY unfortunate and kaiser started it and Universities are doing the same thing and connected to kaiser and it’s road map to egregious profit at all costs regardless of the many costs to human life.
When I first went to a legislative hearing in 1989, I talked testified about the abuse and killing of patients and what was being done to employees and ever since, NADA! NIL, ZILCH, ZERO and now has gotten to a level that IS insanity!

Like Dayton said the ” The Wolf Guards The Chicken coup’  In the conference office they have a live video and telephone, for direct contact live, right to mayo clinic.  I will bet you a coffee some day, Kaiser has one too.  Just think how much money there would be for GOOD, SAFE MEDICAL care, if we got rid of all the agencies that are Protecting the Health Care Industry., and went back to medicine as we knew it.      Perhaps the cultures that pay doctors to keep the patient well, and pays nothing when they are ill, have the right Idea.

The state’s health & human service and Dept of Managed Health care are two of those that need to be gone after and I’m with you about all of these departments that are protecting the the health care industry would also include the DEPT. OF INSURANCE in any state. There is also the NCOIL, THE Nation Comm on Insurance Legislation that is held every year by a federal senator, once a year that makes policy on any/all health care/insurance…etc. I don’t know now whether or no it is still in existence since 10-1-2013 BUT, it was run by a different senator every year and those who were in insurance health care were changing the the policies from year to year, and the way I saw it, just screwing as patients and or policy holders.. and this is really what help lead states doing their own thing and IT WAS NOT in the best interest of the patients/citizens of these states. Far too many fingers in the pie and we were losing while insurance, hospitals, HMO’s were jacking it all up while making a killing on the stock market. One insurance rep in a Comm on Helath & safty & workers comp hearing admitted to “gaming it”. It’s on you tube with a woman Sandi Trend who honestly asked what GAMING IT really meant! I knew what it was but it was like getting one’s hand caught in the cookie jar and it’s on the internet, you tube.
In fact, IT IS the insurance industry that had wide control and because of that, I believe that is why the new health law came into being. and that I feel in my own way, that the ACA IS NOT FOR the insurance industry. It may look like it now but ultimately now the federal govt will be able to force accountability since the insurance industry was acting all on their own prior to this law and now they do have to answer to the feds..rate hikes, denials, etc… The new law does more than one thinks. No longer will self-insured employers be able to just deny medical care when you are injured by the employer (the employer HAD complete control of the claim as it was prior to the new law and now the employer can be in some accountable postion) and now if a self-insured employer denies medical care, it comes up for an investigation. That was brought to my attention some months back and that is great news to anyone who isn’t held hostage on whether to settle for peanuts and sell out their benefits such as medical care. That never happened before. The self-insured employers were denying care and shifting it off to Medicare as in federal Medicare in God only knows how many billions for well over 20 years! I’m on the board of MCRC not kprc. Managed Health care Reform Comm. I hate acronyms and get them mixed up.

I just want to add to, that anyone who ever made a complaint as a reguiar patient were targeted and treated like criminals, no matter whether an injury on the job or needing regular care…. The true malingerers and frauds are the insurance industry as well as the likes of Kaiser. Part of our medical policies is money that goes for patient or worker fraud. The NICB, National Institute Crime Bureau, the insurance indutsry’s very own non profit police department( it’s an illegal insurance police (they have every insurance claim you ever filed, a secret file, I might add. and why it’s illegal. But these the NICB touts the fraud of those who make any kind of insurance claim costs us 5 billion a year. They’s like the insurance nazi’s with sub rosa (undercover surveillance”, people working undercover to catch the ” frauds”, well they should turn the giant mirror on themselves (employers ARE doing this) for all the destruction, illness and death they’ve caused by not allowing medical care to those who need it., but we pay for it via our insurance and or medical policies. To say that this insurance cartel are sinister & sadistic is an understatement.

Counting just the cases that collapse and die while under the hospital roof does a disservice to those who acquire an injury while hospitalized but collapse and die on the outside. With the one-day hospital stays that are common these days many injury cases manifest at home. Then there are the cases where an iatrogenic injury has occurred but due to the nature of that injury, and the fact it is of a progressive sort, can take days, months, or years to actually kill the victim.
Bile duct injury at a botched gallbladder surgery is a case-in-point: it can kill fast or slow but is going to end just one way. Does it really make a difference if the death is removed from what actually caused it by days, weeks, months, or years?

Nicolas Martin

Quality is the outcome of market competition. Given the increased centralization of American medical care since the 1960s, evolving into a fully centralized neo-fascist system with mere vestiges of private competition, there is no reason to think things will improve. And despite all of the conferences and directives, there appears to have been no improvement.  Obamacare consolidates and enlarges centralized control, and so is likely to exacerbate medical harm and cause more deaths.

In truth “patient safety” has become a profitable business, much as “pain undertreatment” has been for decades. Specialists are paid munificent sums to study, confer, and issue reports decrying the deficiencies, while the problems worsen. The worse things get, the more profitable the work of the ineffective specialists become.

Elizabeth, yes, you are ever so correct. With the witnessing of those who were denied care many years ago, did succumb to their deaths and if you are exposed to say mold or asbestos(at the work place) and didn’t know, and that you will not know why you got sick or dying far too soon. One Kaiser VP with leukemia was brought over 100 miles away and put into a room filled with MRSA! Now, that is not only a life/death compromising situation, but that VP never knew what brought his demise earlier than expected! Or the kids at a new school exposed to mold and why are they ever so sick. Or working in a toxic dump like Downey , CA with a Kaiser hospital built on top or playing in a park that is also a toxic dump. then there are the railroads where shoppers will go with a newly built mall!

What we need is a website FOR patients and or their family members to be able to list doctor’s who were charged with any criminal charges!
A Patient’s own data base list of any/all doctors who are charged with any criminal charges against them! Since the government as Shirley stated in an earlier comment, the government is holding that info without allowing the public to know who these errant doctors are, then we as patients need to have our own!

We had a kaiser doctor stalk one of his patients after she proved that he cur her carotid artery, all just to get 4 surgeries under his belt to get his board certification. She was told, that she had a lymph throat cancer and came to find out she never had any cancer whatsoever. He started out as dentist and then became a regular M.D. after that butcher job on her and she need oxygen to breath because of the one side of her body has literally shrunk because of the lack of oxygen to her heart & lungs via the butchered carotid and ho she found out was ask for her biopsy. Her name is Jupereina Stein and is on the internet for her story.
IN, CA, Governor Brown put into the last WC “REFORM” that no injured worker could get the name of the medical legal evaluator (for rating a disability) or be able to sue for their outright malpractice to deny any care or compensation..So, in essence, the state could hire a floor sweeper to evaluate one’s injuries and that’s that. The reports are all too often written with profound outright lies on IW’s serious conditions, minimizing them so the self-insured employer doesn’t have to pay anything on Permanent disability and they haven’t paid for hardly anything (for the IW themsleves, jus tto those who are able to make billions in a cesspool of fraud, abuse & corruption, now going on for over 2 decades & now where SSDI & Medicare get to pick up the tab, ALL thanks Congress & now you all want to cut that too?????. @Dina J. Padilla, who yesterday, at 5:08 p.m., said:  What we need is a website FOR patients and or their family members to be able to list doctor’s who were charged with any criminal charges!

Sort of an “Angina’s List”?

(If the bad pun doesn’t inspire you, consider it a reference to the heartache such medical professionals cause.)

On a more serious note, a separate category recording the stories of those who suffered or died because an insurance company denied (or “inexplicably” delayed) coverage would be useful both as a reference for Americans choosing who their insurer will be and as a memorial to the victims.

Oct. 13, 2013, 4:08 p.m.

By the way:  Said list of actions by insurance companies that lead to suffering or death should include who was CEO and the major shareholders of that insurance company at the time in question.

Bad people get away with doing a lot of bad things in America just because they can hide behind the name of the corporate “person” (according to Citizens United), letting the corporation take the heat for the evil that they made the corporation do.

Oct. 13, 2013, 4:21 p.m.

(Is like the ACA/“Obamacare” portal/website:  The Republicans are trying to make a big stink about the fact that it isn’t performing up to snuff due to the enormous demand that the Republicans denied ever existed, and the talking heads of the right and even the talking heads of the more neutral media are obliging them by reporting about any snafus.

So what corporation “won” the contract for building said portal/website?  Who is running that corporation?  Who is running the project for that corporation?  Who are the major shareholders in that corporation?  How do that corporation, the personnel horsing the portal building project, and those major shareholders distribute their political donations?  Is that corporation a major donor to the United States Chamber of Commerce or the American Enterprise Institute, big players/sticks/weapons of “the right”?

I.e., is the corporation secretly vested in sub-par performance?

We seem to complete dismiss accountability and responsibility once the actions in question begin to involve corporations…)

The list of bad doctors could include the CEO and the corporations that run these hospitals. A list of abusive, arrogant, incompetent, Doctors, is urgently needed, and a very good idea….............        Steve.. A sort of a Angie’s list was well taken,  and the Insurance Company list is a good idea also. There is a difference i would like to point out.. Insurance companies do up front give a consumer full disclosure and a schedule of benefits. when you purchase your policy. In Medicine there is no contract, that tells what the doctor will or has done in the past.  No information about any criminal charges or abuse that is open to the public, and even the very minimal information that is out there is not complete.  There is no sign on any hospital or clinic that warns ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Dear Dina,  What kind of surgeries did you witness?  Are these people still alive?

Dina J Padilla

Oct. 15, 2013, 11:13 a.m.

The patients were both diabetic & in their 50’s or so. One had a facial fungus related to diabetes. She would have lived longer than she did in two weeks in a coma never to regain consciousness and the doctors knew that but not her or her family They cut up her face like an egg carton, cutting into tissue, nerves, muscles, bone. Most people would have a hard time surviving that surgery under normal circumstances. The 2nd lady toes were amputated and she died withing the night after her surgery.
Diabetics are poor risk patients for surgeries. Most will not survive the surgeries. Diabetic patients are no more than experiments. This has been going on a long time and what is worse, that now, they’re labeling many people(minorities..diabetic). The inference that certain people or groups are pretargeted is profound. So when someone states you are prediabetic or diabetic, are you an experimental surgery waiting to happen and what will they do with the rest of your organs.  Harvesting organs is a huge underground multi-dollar business When I saw the too cavalier and excitement over experimental surgeries that would kill off two patients and they or their family would not know about it, just got to me & I left my job at kaiser in the hospital on a stress issue. NEVER, DID I EVER SEE SUCH GLEE OR EXCITEMENT in taking care of any other patients and I worked in another hospital in the midwest but NEVER seen the likes of this place called kaiser.

One kaiser nurse stated that this woman would be in a coma for two weeks and never open her eyes and I asked her how she knew that and she said, it was done all the time. With the exactness,  cold & callousness of her explanation still leaves me chilled to the bone, that a human being is nothing but an experiment with no thought of them as a human being, much less a patient. The 2nd woman was supposed to be taken to a MICU unit and the nursing supervisor put her in a regular room floor (6 patients) where she was exposed to infection. The idea of a surgical patient with life threatening issues put into a regular bed with the high susceptibility of infection is not a hospital protocol but with kaiser, it is a great way to ensure the deaths of innocent people.
