Our Hottest Stories
Scott, a deputy managing editor, has been at ProPublica since 2008. He directs a team of data journalists and reporter-programmers.
In addition to narrative stories, his team’s work takes the form of large interactive software projects called “news applications,” which make complex national statistics relevant to readers and their communities. The team’s news applications include Dollars for Docs, which lets readers see how much their doctors receive in payments from pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and Electionland — the largest-ever collaborative journalism project around a single event — in which more than 1,100 journalists from around the U.S. used call center data and social media verification techniques to report about voting problems during the 2016 election.
His team’s awards include 12 Malofiej International Infographics Award medals, three Data Journalism Awards and more than 50 Society for News Design Awards of Excellence, including special recognition for “defining the design language of data-driven news apps.” A full list of their projects is at propublica.org/data.
Scott was also co-founder of DocumentCloud, a service that helps news organizations search, manage and present their source documents. He teaches Data Visualization at The New School’s Journalism+Design program and is on an advisory board for The Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
