Mixed Company
Firestone and Liberia: Comfort, conflict and enduring bonds.
by Ashley Gilbertson
Firestone gave Joseph Brown’s father a treasured job, but today he says the company mostly gives him problems as he tries to make a living fishing the Farmington River.
For Mary Pollee, Firestone’s plantation in Liberia has been the scene of love, loss and enduring anger.
Sam Bindi fled the Firestone plantation in fear and found refuge in Staten Island’s Little Liberia. He remembers hard days working the plantation as a child, but he is nonetheless nostalgic for the place of his birth.
