Three ProPublica Finalists Named in NABJ Awards

ProPublica is proud to announce that three of its projects are finalists for the National Association of Black Journalists' 2015 Salute to Excellence Awards, the only awards program that honors exemplary coverage of African/African-American people or issues exclusively:

  • "Deadly Force," our in-depth analysis of killings by police that showed an outsize risk for young black males, was selected as a finalist for digital media, single news story.
  • "Segregation Now," ProPublica's investigation on the continuing segregation of America's schools, was the sole finalist for digital media, interactive feature.
  • "Black America's Invisible Crisis," our co-published report with Essence on how Americans in violent neighborhoods are developing PTSD at rates similar to combat veterans, was named a finalist in the magazine category for investigative reporting.
  • The winners will be announced at the Salute to Excellence Gala in August (see a full list of finalists here). NABJ will also take time at the gala to formally recognize Nikole Hannah-Jones, ProPublica's lead reporter on "Segregation Now," as the organization's Journalist of the Year.
