LISTEN: Paul Kiel on How Foreclosure Relief Programs Have Failed

Earlier today, ProPublica reporter Paul Kiel was a guest on WBUR's Here & Now to talk about home loan modifications and the difficulties homeowners continue to face when trying to get the help they need.

In particular, Kiel recounts a California woman's harrowing story when she lost her job and found out her cancer had metastasized on the same day. She relentlessly tried contacting her bank but didn't get an answer until ProPublica investigated and drew attention to her situation.

"It took us doing a story and MSNBC doing a segment about her...and finally she got a loan modification," Kiel says. "Sometimes you wonder what it takes. And sometimes it takes getting on national television."

"And having cancer. And losing your job," host Robin Young added.

Kiel was also recently interviewed on KCRW's To The Point. In his segment, Kiel further discusses foreclosures, home loan mods, and the Obama administration's failed efforts to address the housing crisis. It begins at 8:02.

You can read more about loan modifications and foreclosures in ProPublica's extensive series, Eye on Loan Modifications.
