Erin Smith was an engagement reporter at ProPublica.
She previously worked as a newspaper investigative reporter before a brief stint producing investigations for local television news stations. She was part of the team at the Boston Herald awarded a Sigma Delta Chi Award for coverage of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and also won a Sigma Delta Chi Award for her 2014 coverage of systemic failures in Massachusetts foster care. In 2020, she won a National Murrow Award after a two-year investigation into engine fires in Kia and Hyundai vehicles, which led the automakers to issue recalls for more than a million cars and SUVs.
