How ProPublica Investigated the Navy and Marine Corps

UPDATE: This live event has reached capacity. However, due to high demand, we’ll be livestreaming it as well. You can tune in here. If you want to be notified when the event begins, sign up here. We'll also send you our biggest stories as soon as they publish.

ProPublica won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting this month for “Disaster in the Pacific.” The series investigated the Navy and Marine Corps after a series of accidents — the crashes of the USS Fitzgerald and the USS John S. McCain within just a few months of each other and a nighttime aviation training exercise gone wrong — killed 23 service members.

In this free digital event, join the reporting team that uncovered staggering leadership failures that were responsible for the deadly accidents. ProPublica’s T. Christian Miller, Megan Rose, Robert Faturechi and Kengo Tsutsumi will share how they gained the trust of service members who broke their code of silence and overcame the Navy’s active attempts to block the story. They will be joined by Navy Cmdr. Bryce Benson, captain of the Fitzgerald, in a conversation moderated by senior editor Tracy Weber.

The reporters will also answer your questions on what it took to uncover this story and the impact it’s had on the military.
