ProPublica is seeking a freelance communications professional to assist our communications team with daily tasks.
The primary responsibility is to produce daily reports of significant media coverage across television, radio, podcasts, social media and other news reports assisted by media monitoring software and other sources. Because ProPublica is supported by donors and offers its articles free for republishing, tracking reprints and links is also crucial to our model. The communications assistant will also help maintain our internal database tracking coverage of our work. This includes sorting and tagging media mentions with additional information. Other tasks may include compiling custom clip reports for editors or fundraising staff.
We’re specifically looking for someone who has:
- Broad knowledge of news media and shrewd news judgment.
- Experience with Meltwater, Muck Rack, Cision or other media monitoring software.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets (experience using AirTable is a plus).
- The ability to work efficiently and independently.
This is a remote freelance position requiring approximately 10-15 hours per week. Freelancers are independent contractors and will not be treated by ProPublica as employees for any purpose. Independent contractors are responsible for paying any required taxes on any compensation received and for understanding the applicable tax laws.
If all of this sounds exciting to you, you can apply using this form.
We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
We are dedicated to widening our pool of freelancers, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. We are an equal opportunity employer and prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or any other status protected under applicable law.
We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.
