Director of Leadership Gifts

ProPublica seeks an enthusiastic, collaborative, experienced and goal-oriented development professional to build and manage a team of front-line fundraisers as the organization’s first director of leadership gifts. The director will join a successful and growing development team responsible for raising over $40 million annually and for implementing best practices as we grow an already robust major gifts program. The director reports to the senior vice president of development.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop ambitious revenue targets for major gifts that increase year over year; develop and implement plans to meet these goals. Establish, track and report on fundraising plans; manage budgets; and proactively forecast shifts in revenue expectations.
  • Hire and manage a team of three to four major gift officers over the next several months.
  • Work closely with the director of development services and other stakeholders to establish a moves management system in the Salesforce database, and play a key role in its implementation in the department. Utilize data and metrics to benchmark efforts, inform strategic and tactical decision-making and identify broad-based solicitation opportunities.
  • Implement identification, cultivation and stewardship activities that strengthen long-term relationships with major donors, from research, to cultivation, to engagement, to solicitation, to stewardship, to renewed engagement and new solicitation.
  • Manage a targeted portfolio of major donors, modeling best practices and leading by example.
  • Manage the Leadership Council giving circle.
  • Plan and develop substantive experiences for groups of donors, both virtual and in person.
  • Out-of-state travel to cultivate and solicit donors will be required, consistent with public health guidelines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements:

This position is a critical member of the development team. The successful candidate will be a collegial and collaborative team player. The ideal candidate will have seven or more years of experience in front-line fundraising, a proven ability to close gifts of $25,000 and over, experience cultivating and securing gifts from prospective donors and experience managing a team. Confidentiality and excellent oral and written communication skills, strong initiative and problem-solving skills are all essential, as is attention to detail and the ability to establish priorities and work accurately under time constraints. Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite, with some familiarity with Salesforce or other fundraising databases. Must be committed to building a respectful, welcoming and inclusive environment. Excellent project management skills are required, including the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and maintain disciplined adherence to department goals.

This is a full-time position ideally based in New York City, but we are open to remote candidates. Proof of vaccination is required to work in our office. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.
