ProPublica Announces Senior Editor to Lead New Global Public Health Team

ProPublica announced on Wednesday that reporter Patricia Callahan has been promoted to senior editor, leading the new global public health team. In this role, she will oversee investigations into ongoing questions about the COVID-19 pandemic, biosecurity and public health preparedness.

A staff member since 2018, Callahan first came to ProPublica from the Chicago Tribune, where her 2007 investigation “Hidden Hazards” prompted the recall of more than a million baby products and the largest overhaul of consumer product safety laws in a generation, in addition to winning a Pulitzer Prize. Since joining ProPublica, Callahan has added to her record of revelatory public interest reporting by exposing the consequences of Amazon’s demand for speed from delivery drivers; investigating Evenflo’s false assurance to parents that its car seats would protect kids from side-impact crashes; detailing the stunning fall of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and, as part of the reporting team behind the “Secret IRS Files” series, showing how the world’s wealthiest people avoid paying taxes by leveraging retirement accounts intended for the middle class.

“Trish is an investigative powerhouse who has worked for years to expose widespread dangers hidden in everyday life and flaws in the systems that fail to keep us safe,” Alexandra Zayas, deputy managing editor, said. “We are thrilled to bring her ambition, investigative know-how and passion for public health to our team covering one of the most critical issues in the world.”
