Democracy, Extremism and the Media

A new documentary from ProPublica and FRONTLINE, “Plot to Overturn the Election,” examines key members of the movement to spread the belief that the 2020 U.S. presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. The investigation traces the group’s efforts to undermine faith in the electoral system, from secret meetings creating the narrative of widespread fraud to injecting their disinformation into the White House.

Exploring the origins and reverberating impact of the “big lie,” however, is just one way that ProPublica is covering rising threats to democracy.

Join us for a conversation, moderated by ProPublica Editor-in-Chief Stephen Engelberg, with ProPublica reporters A.C. Thompson, Megan O’Matz and Jeremy Schwartz. They will discuss how the newsroom is reporting on this issue, including coverage of far-reaching disinformation, the state-by-state movement to alter election practices and policies, and the trend toward forcing out independent elections officials in favor of partisan administrators.

What broader lessons can be gleaned from the campaign behind the “Big Lie”? What are the similarities and differences we’re seeing across the country? And when more than 40% of Americans believe the last election was rigged, where are we headed next?
