Sarah Matthews

I’m ProPublica’s deputy general counsel.

What I Do

As ProPublica’s deputy general counsel, I provide legal support for the organization’s full range of activities, with emphasis on the newsroom.

My Background

Before joining ProPublica, I worked for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, where I litigated cases involving access to public records and proceedings, fought subpoenas and filed amicus briefs on First Amendment issues. I also led a prepublication review practice and supervised a legal hotline for journalists. Before that, I worked for The Walt Disney Co. and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and served as a law clerk for a federal district judge. I graduated from New York University School of Law and Brown University.
