As a nonprofit news organization, ProPublica is primarily funded by donations from individuals. Since 2011, we have also accepted advertising on our website and, subsequently, sponsorship of our newsletters, podcast, and events. Advertising and sponsorship help ensure that we have diverse revenue sources to support our independent, fearless journalism.

The majority of the advertising on our website is programmatic advertising, which means that we have no relationship or contact with the companies or organizations who advertise on our site. We do not review such ads before they appear on our website, and we do not approve or limit who can advertise on our website through these services. We reserve the right to remove an advertisement from our site, however.

We will remove or reject advertisements that we know or believe to be misleading, inaccurate, fraudulent or illegal, or that fail to comply, in ProPublica’s sole discretion, with its standards of decency, taste or dignity. We will not remove advertisements simply because we disagree with their content. In general, we believe that our readers are smart and skeptical enough to evaluate advertising for themselves.

ProPublica, like all quality publishers of original journalism, maintains a clear separation between news and advertising content. Any advertising that attempts to blur this distinction in a manner that we believe confuses readers will be rejected.

We do not accept sponsorship of news applications, series, or other targeted sections of our website from any participant in the industry or sector covered within that section of the site.
