Zach Despart

I’m a reporter with the ProPublica-Texas Tribune investigative unit, focusing on the intersection of business, politics and government.

Have a Tip for a Story?

I’m interested in receiving tips about government, politics and business in Texas.

What I Cover

I report on government, politics and business in Texas. I’m currently focused on voting rights and business and government actions related to state resources, including oil and gas, water and electricity.

My Background

I have covered government and politics for more than a dozen years.

I was part of the team that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for reporting on the flawed police response to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. That series, which was made possible by a trove of law enforcement records I obtained from a confidential source, also won the Collier Prize.

My reporting at the Houston Chronicle revealed that the death toll from the 2021 Texas blackouts was far higher than the government initially reported, and how the failure of concert staff and police to act on warning signs led to the deaths of 10 fans in the Astroworld Festival disaster.

An investigation I did into how Texas diverted Hurricane Harvey aid away from areas most at risk for storms led to a federal investigation that concluded the state had discriminated against Black and Hispanic residents. I also reported on firefighters being denied workers’ compensation benefits for cancer likely caused by on-the-job exposure to chemicals, which spurred the Legislature to pass a law expanding coverage.

At The Texas Tribune, I led the effort to become the first news organization to map the fragmented 50-mile Texas border wall. The project found that the state could not build contiguous sections because it struggled with holdout landowners along the route.

I am also a three-time finalist for Investigative Reporters and Editors awards and winner of the best feature award from the national Association of Alternative Newsmedia.
