Narcotics supervisors on the Philadelphia police force repeatedly signed off on search-warrant requests that flouted safeguards put in place to avoid corruption, reports the Philadelphia Daily News. The paper has previously detailed allegations that narcotics officers robbed businesses they searched and relied on informants’ questionable claims. The unit’s search warrants are now under investigation by Internal Affairs and the FBI.
Also, in 2003, a report from the CIA’s inspector general recommended that outside experts assess whether waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques actually helped glean reliable information from terror suspects. But the CIA has yet to conduct “a rigorous assessment of whether the methods were effective or necessary,” or consider other approaches, senior officials tell the Los Angeles Times.
