The Army has recalled 34,000 shoddy combat helmets that had faulty screws. The helmets were made by a client of PMA Group, the defense lobbying firm that closed in March amid an FBI probe of its campaign contributions, reports The Hill. The company, Gentex Corp., and PMA Group were top contributors to Rep. Chris Carney (D-PA), whose earmarks have gone to Gentex in the past. Gentex says it is looking for another screw supplier.

Also, almost 70 percent of elevators in Chicago haven’t been inspected in the past year, despite laws that require annual inspections, reports the Chicago Tribune. In addition, the city doesn’t keep track of whether elevators that failed inspections are ever fixed. The city said that the recent building boom sparked a need for new inspections that “dramatically impacted the bureau’s ability to complete” them.
