Many Americans are struggling to navigate the complicated process of filing their taxes as the 2021 deadline approaches. With a pandemic, recent tax reforms and delayed stimulus checks, among other new challenges, taxpayers have questions about how to file this year.

Join ProPublica and Code for America’s GetYourRefund.org for this live digital event with practical information for filing taxes. Among other pointers, local and national experts will cover:

  • Tax prep options, either software or in-person, that are free
  • New rules for the earned income tax credit
  • Ways that unemployment insurance can affect taxes
  • Reasons returns may be delayed

The event will also cover systemic issues in the tax filing system, as outlined in ProPublica’s extensive reporting on taxes and the IRS — from how companies like TurboTax, H&R Block and others have worked against making tax preparation easier (and free) to the huge backlog of paperwork at the IRS that is already slowing tax returns.

In addition, Denise Eckley, career center manager at Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers; David Newville, senior program director, tax benefits, at Code for America; and Elizabeth Maresca, clinical professor of law at Fordham University School of Law will answer audience questions about the tax system.

This session is not intended to give advice about your personal tax or financial situation; you should consult with a counselor or tax preparer with individual questions. Rather, it is intended to provide resources and information to clarify the confusing steps and requirements in the tax filing system.
