Use Our Dollars for Docs Widget on Your Site

As part of ProPublica’s “Dollars for Docs” series and interactive news application, we've created a small widget that you can embed on your web site. It will let your readers look up whether their health care providers are taking money from the drug companies in our database. The widget shows the amount of money paid to each practitioner in our database, which company made the payment, and in some cases, what the companies saidthey were paying for: speaking fees, consulting, etc. The widget also lists what drugs each company sells so readers can check their own prescriptions.

We’ll be keeping this data up-to-date roughly quarterly, and the widget running on your site will always have the latest data.

Paste this code on your site:
How Does it Work?

All you’ll need to do on your site is to copy and paste a short line of code onto your web pages at the point you want the widget to appear. In many ways, it works just like embedding a YouTube video.

Nerd-to-Nerd Stuff

The widget is roughly 300px wide, but is fluid to accommodate slightly smaller and larger viewports.

We track the number of views the widget gets on your site, but we track absolutely nothing about your users. We don't set or read any cookies.

Help!  When I paste the code into my blog sidebar, the code starts off as:
<div id=“propublica-doctor-dollars-widget” style=“width:320px; height: 420px;”>[removed][removed]</div>

— but then changes to:

<div id=“propublica-doctor-dollars-widget” style=“width:320px;height:420px;”></div>

as soon as I click ‘save’.

It’s a Wordpress blog at http://www.ethicalnag.org

Thanks!

Carolyn, just to be sure—are you using Wordpress’s “HTML” view?

Hi Scott!
Yes - the same as I would if I were publishing any other sidebar widget.

Thx
Carolyn

I understand the interest in this, however, vilifying doctors by saying they are “taking” money from the drug companies is simply incorrect. They are legally working for, and getting paid by the drug companies. Morally compromised or not, they are in fact, earning that money.

So some doctors are just practicing the world’s oldest profession on the side, but legal, like in Nevada? No vilification, just enlightenment! Great! We could all use more enlightenment!

So getting paid for your time is wrong?  People need to wake up.  MDs work hard, go through a lot of training and deserve to be compensated for their skills. Just like any other profession.  I would love to see any of these investigative journalists on this site write these stories for free.

How much did pharma give to politicians? And they have no training AT ALL in pharmacology. Why havent our politicians had the pay cuts that they imposed on physicians? Both classes of people are paid by the taxpayer.

Hilarious. Lawmakers in Washington threatened action against medical personnel receiving pens and pads of paper because it might influence decision-making, so that was discontinued. Now, the database shows the average physician collecting—what, $600 on the average? Spend your time and energy on the real criminals in Washington DC who receive millions in the express hope of influence in decision-making, and whose votes directly affect my life also. Besides, with the regular devaluation what doctors provide and quarterly cuts to health care providers by MediCare and insurance companies, you have to pay for medical school somewhere.

The big story is the incestuous relationship between the FDA and drug companies.  Conflict of interest - You bet!  Drug companies pay them hundreds of million of $ and sit on their boards.  Truly the bigger story. I believe Minnesota is the only state that requires reporting of shrinks and drug company payment.  Google Dr. Bruzynski to see the power connections.
