Free Food and Networking: Apply For Our Diversity Mentorship Program at ONA

ProPublica is proud to announce our second annual Diversity Mentorship Program at the Online News Association conference in Denver this year. You can apply here.

Last year, we had great success matching more than 30 up-and-coming journalists with senior journalists and editors from around the world. This year, we are hosting a breakfast for 50 people on Friday, Sept. 16th, at 8:30 a.m. We’ll have a 2:1 mentee:mentor ratio, which means we’ll be accepting around 33 mentees for the event.

This breakfast is one of many steps ProPublica is taking to make it easier for journalists from underrepresented communities to get to know us and other leaders in the industry.

Anyone who is part of an underrepresented community — including African Americans, Latinos, other people of color, women, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities — is encouraged to apply here. Only applicants who will be attending ONA and are available that Friday morning will be considered.

Mentors will be managing editors, executive editors and other top journalists from across the industry. Based on your application, we’ll try to match you with a mentor who shares your interests and can best address the issues you bring up. During breakfast, you’ll have plenty of time with your mentor, and also the opportunity to meet the other mentors and each other. We’re hoping — and expecting — the mentor/mentee relationship to continue long after the breakfast is over.

The deadline to apply is Monday, Aug. 29. We’ll let you know if you’ve been matched with a mentor by Tuesday, Sept. 6. We’ll do our best to match everyone, but please keep in mind that space is limited.

A special thank you to Knight-Mozilla OpenNews and News Republic for sponsoring this event. We could not do this without their financial support.

We’re excited to be hosting this event at ONA, which has become one of the largest gatherings of digital journalists.
