Reporting Fellow, ProPublica Illinois

We are not currently accepting applications for this position.

Do you love investigative reporting and want to do more of it? Do you dream of working with and learning from some of the most accomplished journalists in the business? Well, we have good news for you. We’re looking for a reporting fellow to join ProPublica Illinois, our almost one-year-old regional operation.

ProPublica fellows report their own stories — like this one — and collaborate with ProPublica’s reporters on in-depth projects. There’s even room to do the occasional story like this. Reporting fellows at ProPublica have gone on to work at The New York Times, Bloomberg, Politico, NPR and the Chicago Tribune, among other news organizations — as well as ProPublica itself.

The fellowship runs for a year, pays $750 a week and includes full benefits. The position is full-time and based in Chicago. Start date would be early fall.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is a developing, early-career reporter, whether that means recently graduating from college or journalism school or having come to this work through another path.
  • Wants to report stories about wrongdoing, injustice and abuses of power. Even better if you already have some experience doing this.
  • Gets truly excited about all the possible tools we can use for journalism now, from digging deep into data to engaging with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms. If you have specific skills in any of these areas, let us know.
  • Works well as part of a team. At ProPublica Illinois, we are a small but mighty force, committed to collaboration inside and outside our newsroom. We believe we do our best journalism together.

We expect that great candidates won’t necessarily fit every criteria we’ve described above. And you may also have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are dedicated to building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages, and we’re taking active steps to meet this commitment. We especially encourage members of historically underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. (If you’d like to learn a bit about us, see our series of Q&As with members of our newsroom.)

To apply, please fill out this form. For writing samples, please send us stories that highlight your best reporting, especially hard-hitting investigative journalism or in-depth explanatory work.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 27, 2018.
