Introducing a New Way to Participate in ProPublica’s Journalism

<a href="http://thenounproject.com/noun/community/#icon-No2554" target="_blank">Community</a> designed by <a href="http://thenounproject.com/catalarem" target="_blank">Rémy Médard</a> from The Noun Project

ProPublica is committed to journalism in the public interest and recognizes that you help make much of that journalism possible. So today, we’re excited to introduce another way for our readers to take part in our mission: Get Involved.

Get Involved is all about action. Wherever you see Get Involved, you will find ways to contribute to ProPublica’s journalism, through discussions, community groups, calls for stories, crowd-sourcing projects and more. We care about likes and shares, but we care more about connecting with people like you with insights, expertise and stories to share.

Get Involved is also about impact. At its best, journalism can spur reform and inspire solutions. We want to help you be a part of that. Whether airing your opinion, proposing solutions to the ProPublica community or giving your two cents to elected officials, our goal is to facilitate constructive action around our journalism.

With action and impact as our guideposts, you’ll notice many pages in Get Involved include a participation metric, such as stories shared. We also banner two metrics atop each page that give a sense of our overall community and help keep us motivated.

Tips shared: This is the total number of stories readers have shared with us through callouts and questionnaires. Such callouts help inform our reporting on everything from housing discrimination to patient safety.

Contributors: This is the total number of people contributing to the ProPublica community through groups, crowdsourcing, or the Reporting Network.

To new readers, welcome. We hope you’ll explore Get Involved and we invite you to sign up for our Reporting Network to receive updates about our investigations and information on collaborative reporting projects as they arise. You can also follow us on Tumblr, where we’ll be tracking our progress on major projects and highlighting contributions from the community.

Do you have thoughts about Get Involved or ideas for collaborative journalism? Please share your ideas in the comments below, or send an email to [email protected].

Thanks as always,

Amanda Zamora and Blair Hickman, your Get Involved team
