We are not currently accepting applications for this position.
As we face a global pandemic, an American cultural reckoning on racial injustice, an unfolding economic crisis and an upcoming election, never has the role of investigative journalism been more critical. We are looking for an experienced, ambitious and collegial reporter who is eager to seize this moment and uncover how these issues and others are playing out in Chicago and Illinois.
You’ll join a newsroom that has, since its launch a little less than three years ago, produced investigative journalism that has helped erase millions of dollars in debt, oust government officials, change state policy and free people from prison. Our stories have ranged from multipart examinations of the impact of video gambling across the state to a first-person reported essay about the lingering effects of racism in a small town. We’ve even done a little theater.
Ideally, you’ll have a track record of reporting ambitious stories that create change. But many of our reporters were not previously “investigative reporters,” and you don’t need to be either. What all of us at ProPublica have in common is a dedication to digging for the truth. So, if this sounds like your dream job, we want you to apply. Here’s the form.
We’re looking for a reporter who:
Has produced original, revelatory, in-depth or investigative stories. If that experience is in Illinois, all the better, but we are very open to applicants with strong bodies of work from other places.
Aches to report stories that are both important and powerfully told.
Wants to bring an accountability lens to the issues of the day through quick-turnaround investigations as well as longer projects.
Really likes working with others. We are a highly collaborative newsroom, both across our team and with other news organizations in Illinois and nationally. We believe we do our best work together.
Again, we know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of the ProPublica staff.) We’re committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using this form.
The job is full time and includes benefits. It is based in our Chicago office. Given the pandemic, we will consider remote applicants, though the ultimate goal is for the reporter to be based here in Chicago. If you currently live elsewhere, we’ll relocate you in accordance with our policies.
Questions? Send them to [email protected]. No phone calls, please. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Aug. 23, at 11:59 p.m. Central time.
