What I Cover
I go where the data leads me. I was a member of the Rx Roulette team, which covered the Food and Drug Administration’s allowance of potentially harmful generic medications into the U.S., and covered the Department of Government Efficiency’s haphazard use of artificial intelligence at the Department of Veterans Affairs. I also co-developed and regularly update our 527 Explorer app, which illuminates little-known political nonprofit organizations.
My Background
I’m a journalist on ProPublica’s news applications team, where I perform technically sophisticated investigations and build tools in the public interest.
I’ve spent much of my career applying computational techniques to difficult journalistic problems, working with organizations like Oregon Public Broadcasting, WHYY, The Seattle Times and The Austin Bulldog. I’ve also trained international cohorts of journalists in the use of AI with the London School of Economics and founded an educational technical journal, Artificial Informer. This background has led me to not just use AI but investigate the government’s use of these technologies.
My work has been cited by the ACLU, resulted in the closing of tax loopholes and spurred congressional calls for government transparency, and my projects have supported countless reporters at the local and national level.
