Chris Alcantara

I use charts, maps, data visualizations and other forms of visual journalism to hold power accountable and expose wrongdoing.

Need to Get in Touch?

I welcome tips from people who have interesting datasets, documents, imagery or video evidence of wrongdoing that can be shaped into a compelling visual story.

What I Cover

I use code, data, cartography, videos and photography to create intuitive and interesting graphics for ProPublica.

My Background

I previously worked on the graphics desk at The Washington Post, where, for nearly a decade, I covered a range of national and world news, including U.S. presidential and congressional elections, the Olympic Games, mass killings, police shootings, workplace injuries, terrorism, the economy and the tech industry.

Before the Post, I was an interactive news developer at the Miami Herald. I built graphics and contributed data analysis and reporting to investigations into prisoner abuse at Florida’s sole women’s-only prison, a corrupt police task force, for-profit college scams and complaints about Miami’s bus system.

My work has been recognized by the Malofiej Awards for Infographics, the Society for News Design, the National Press Foundation and the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing. I also contributed graphics and reporting, at both the Post and the Herald, for projects recognized by the Pulitzer Prize Board.

I’m a graduate of the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications.
