Christopher Bing

I cover the rapid intersection between technology and national security.

Need to Get in Touch?

If you have a tip that warrants public scrutiny, heard an intriguing rumor or simply have advice about what I should be looking out for, I’d love to hear from you. I have significant experience unraveling complex and sensitive stories.

What I Cover

From Washington, I report on how technology is changing national security and foreign affairs. I am interested in several relevant federal agencies, including the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Treasury and State, as well as the FBI, CIA and National Security Agency.

My Background

I have deep expertise tracking nation state hacking and covert influence operations. For my work revealing how a group of former U.S. intelligence officials became mercenary cyber spies overseas, I was awarded the Deadline Club’s award for best beat reporting and the National Press Club’s Edwin M. Hood Award for diplomatic correspondence. I joined ProPublica in December 2024 as part of the Washington investigations team. I started my career as a local technology business reporter in the D.C. area, covering technology startups and defense companies in 2015. Prior to ProPublica, I worked for Reuters for seven years as a cybersecurity correspondent.

I grew up in the D.C. area and attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland for my undergraduate studies. In May 2024, I graduated from the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies with a master’s degree in cybersecurity, intelligence and military strategy.
