Doug Bock Clark

I’m a ProPublica reporter covering threats to democracy, elections and voting rights.

Have a Tip for a Story?

I welcome tips about how politicians, activists, and others are trying to transform American elections for partisan advantage. I am also interested in tips about North Carolina’s legislature, court system, and state government.

What I Cover

I’m currently investigating attempts to transform election systems for partisan advantage across the nation.

My Background

I have reported extensively on threats to democracy for ProPublica, including helping unearth the origins of the “big lie,” exposing multiple efforts to contest and overturn election results across America, showing how six right-wing activists were behind nearly 100,000 voter challenges and revealing how the chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court transformed his state and the nation.

I’m part of ProPublica’s South unit, and I have a special interest in stories about my home region, including North Carolina and Georgia. I also take on stories on my beat from across the U.S. that have national implications.

My reporting for ProPublica and Frontline about the origins of the “big lie” was the basis for a documentary that won the Edward R. Murrow Award and shared the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism.

Prior to ProPublica, my reporting for The New York Times Magazine helped free two unjustly imprisoned men from a foreign jail and my reporting for GQ magazine revealed how the Trump administration distorted classified intelligence to push the nation toward confrontation with North Korea. My first book, “The Last Whalers,” was one of The New York Times’ 100 notable books of 2019 and a finalist for two national prizes. I have produced multiple feature documentaries inspired by my articles for Hulu, HBO, Disney and National Geographic. My work has been recognized for multiple awards and honors, including having an article be named one of the 10 best of the last decade.

Commitment to Sources

Honoring my commitments to sources is of the utmost importance to me. For my reporting, I regularly interact with sources who distrust the media, and my track record shows that I treat them fairly. I have also written stories for which sources have taken risks, and I have effectively protected their anonymity.
