Mario Ariza

I cover Florida for ProPublica.

Need to Get in Touch?

Contact me via email or Signal about big systemic harms happening in Florida or emanating from it. Tell me stories that powerful people or organizations don’t want told.

I’m a reporter in ProPublica’s South unit, where I focus on Florida. I’m interested in climate change, white-collar crime, immigration, education and politics.

Previously, I was an investigative reporter at Floodlight, where my journalism focused on the forces stalling climate action. A two-part series I co-reported with NPR was chosen as a finalist for the 2023 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting and won the Los Angeles Press Club’s award on misinformation. A story from the series won first place for the 2024 Southern Environmental Law Center’s Reed Award for reporting on the environment.

My byline has appeared in publications including the South Florida Sun Sentinel, The Atlantic and The New Republic. I wrote a book called “Disposable City: Miami’s Future on the Shores of Climate Catastrophe,” which was published by Bold Type Books. My essays have been featured in The Believer and selected for Best American Essays, and my poetry can be found in The Baffler and The Rumpus.
