What I Cover

I am the deputy editor of engagement for ProPublica, supporting a team of reporters doing community-informed investigations into a wide range of issues — from disaster preparedness to education and immigration.

My Background

Previously, I served as engagement editor for The Marshall Project, where I oversaw the organization’s strategic efforts to reach people caught up in the criminal justice system. My reporting has focused on states’ efforts to restore voting rights to millions of Americans with felony convictions and how incarceration shapes the political affiliations of people behind bars. I led a first-of-its-kind survey on the politics of over 64,000 people in prison and jail, developing methods to get information out of state and local facilities at scale. The 2020 election survey received an honorable mention from IRE’s Philip Meyer Journalism Award for the pioneering use of social-science research methods.

My career includes editing at Slate, where I led the jurisprudence team covering the Supreme Court, law and politics, as well as reporting stints at The Washington Post and The Hechinger Report. My writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Mother Jones and The Guardian among other publications and has earned numerous accolades, including being named a finalist for the National Magazine Awards in community journalism and illustrated features.

I am a graduate of the University of Michigan and Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, as well as ProPublica’s Investigative Editor Bootcamp and the Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program for media innovation at Columbia University.
