This week’s P5 Resident is Aram Chung.

Aram is currently a dual master’s degree candidate at Columbia University’s joint journalism and computer science program. Aram, who is from Seoul, South Korea, graduated with a degree in mathematical sciences with a minor in industrial design at KAIST in Daejeon, South Korea, where she was also a reporter and editor at the KAIST Herald, the English-language campus monthly newspaper.

While at ProPublica, Aram’s working on a project to build a tool that helps journalists use a mix of crowdsourcing and computation to extract data from unstructured sources like paper records and scanned documents she calls it “humans and computers collaborating on data.” In addition to seeing the latest versions of Tabula, a project we’re working on with Knight-Mozilla OpenNews that extracts tabular data from PDFs, Aram’s gotten a code walk-through of our Free the Files project and is hard at work extracting the parts of the code that will help power her project. In addition to working with developers Al Shaw and Jeremy Merrill, she sat down with our engagement team to talk about coordinating volunteers and with reporters to talk about about their challenges and the tools they’ve used to extract data from printed documents.

Aram, who is the seventh P5 Resident, will continue to work with ProPublica on her project, which should start to yield results in the coming months.

We’re always on the lookout for new P5 Residents. Here are some details on the program and how to apply.
